When we first tried expanding Kung Fu Kids, we opened a location in Blossom Hill. It seemed like a promising idea at the time—it had all the right ingredients for success. But we didn’t anticipate the challenges ahead, and ultimately, we had to close that location down.

It was disheartening, no question about it. You might think a failed expansion would scare us away from trying again, but the truth is, it did the opposite. That experience became the foundation for the success we’ve seen with our expansions into Palo Alto and Pleasanton.

What went wrong in Blossom Hill taught us two critical lessons:

1. Systems Matter: Back then, we didn’t have the systems in place to support a new location properly. There weren’t clear processes for recruiting, training, or maintaining the quality we were known for.

2. Training Is Everything: We assumed our team could hit the ground running without enough preparation. That assumption was a costly mistake. Great organizations thrive on well-trained people, and we realized we needed to invest in continuous, top-tier training.

Fast forward to today, and those hard-learned lessons have made all the difference. With rock-solid systems and a commitment to staff development, we’ve built locations that thrive, delight students, and embody our core values.

Looking back, I wouldn’t change a thing. That failure taught us the lessons that paved the way for our success. And now, as we prepare for even more growth, I’m excited to apply those lessons to keep building something truly extraordinary.
