How One Student Sparked a Movement

It all began with a knock on my parents’ front door.

A young boy named Alex, one of my younger brother’s friends, had watched me compete in a martial arts tournament and came over with an unexpected request: “Would you teach me?”

At the time, I never imagined this moment would change my life forever.

Alex became my first student. I started teaching him and my younger brother outside at Santa Clara University. Before long, Alex brought a friend, and soon, I was teaching three kids.

We needed more space, so I cleared out my parents’ garage. I added mirrors from Home Depot, carpet, a bulletin board, and an American flag. Before I knew it, 25 students were squeezed into that garage, practicing martial arts.

The energy was electric, and the belief these kids and their parents had in what we were building inspired me to take the leap. I gave up my dream of going to medical school, rented a commercial space, and officially opened Kung Fu Kids.

Today, our mission remains the same as it was back then: to help children grow into confident, focused, and resilient adults. And whether your child is looking for a positive activity to build their self-esteem, a way to learn discipline and grit, or just a fun and welcoming place to make new friends, we’d love to have them join us.

It’s amazing to think how far we’ve come, but it all started with one student and a belief in what martial arts could do to change lives.
