The Challenges of Expanding Our Legacy
When I first opened Kung Fu Kids, I had no grand strategy. In fact, my choice of location was as simple as thinking, McDonald’s probably did a lot of research to figure out where to set up shop—let’s follow their lead. So I planted my first location next to McDonald’s!
It worked out, but looking back, I can’t help but realize how much luck played a part. Opening a successful martial arts academy isn’t as simple as following golden arches. You need the right location, surrounded by families and schools, reasonable rent, and—most importantly—a vision.
That first success planted a seed, though: What if we could do this in more places? What if we could bring the transformative power of martial arts to even more children?
Expanding to new locations has been one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. The first hurdle was finding the right people. As much as I wish I could split myself into two or three, each new location needs a dedicated leader to maintain our standards.
We’ve spent years cultivating a team that embodies our values and vision. Every new head instructor goes through rigorous training—not just in martial arts, but in leadership, management, and our teaching methodology. It’s about more than skills; it’s about belief. I tell them, You’ve got this, and I’ve got your back.
Another challenge was ensuring quality. As we grew, we realized that consistency was key. That’s why we developed comprehensive curriculums and documented every process, from teaching techniques to how we fold belts at the end of a class. Every team member follows the same playbook, ensuring that the experience at each location feels as warm, supportive, and engaging as the original.
Expanding has taught me that success isn’t about luck or even hard work—it’s about systems, people, and heart. Today, I’m proud to say that each of our locations carries the same spirit of excellence and community that Kung Fu Kids was built on.
And we’re not done yet. Every day, we’re working toward making martial arts accessible to even more children, helping them grow stronger in body, mind, and spirit.
