I’ll never forget the day Jiawei first stepped onto the mats at Kung Fu Kids. He was 15 years old, barely spoke a word, and struggled with even the simplest movements. His stepfather brought him in after being turned away by multiple martial arts schools. “They said he couldn’t do it,” his stepfather told me. “But I thought maybe you could help.”

Truthfully, I wasn’t sure if we could. But I looked at Jiawei, saw the spark of potential in his eyes, and said, “We’ll give it everything we’ve got.”

Over the next nine years, Jiawei became a regular in our classes. In the beginning, raising his arms for an upper block was a struggle. But through patience, encouragement, and his unwavering determination, Jiawei made progress that no one thought was possible. By the time he left for Texas, he was performing jump kicks, spinning staffs, and training with the same dedication as any other student.

Jiawei’s journey taught me something profound: martial arts isn’t about perfection—it’s about perseverance, growth, and celebrating every small victory.

His story became the inspiration for one of the most important programs we’ve ever created: Spectrum Stars.

I realized that for kids like Jiawei, the traditional martial arts environment—fast-paced, high-energy, and packed with students—can be overwhelming. Spectrum Stars was designed to change that. It’s a calm, supportive class tailored to children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). We focus on developing motor skills, building social confidence, and teaching life skills that help these kids thrive far beyond the mats.

One parent told me recently, “This class has been life-changing for my son. It’s the one place he feels confident and understood.”

And Jiawei’s legacy doesn’t stop there. To honor his impact, we created the Spectrum Stars Scholarship, giving children from underserved families the opportunity to join our program at no cost. Every quarter, local autism therapists nominate kids who need this program but might not otherwise have access to it.

Looking back, I’m so grateful Jiawei walked through our doors that day. He showed me what was possible when we believe in every child, no matter their challenges.

Thank you for being part of a community that shares this belief. Together, we’re not just teaching martial arts—we’re changing lives.
