When Jiawei “Josh” Chen walked through our doors, he changed Kung Fu Kids forever.

Josh’s story is one of courage, transformation, and the incredible impact martial arts can have. He came to us as a 15-year-old with severe physical and cognitive disabilities. His stepfather, Keith, shared that every martial arts academy they had approached had turned him away. They believed Josh was “too disabled” to train.

When Keith brought Josh to us, I saw something different: a young man with immense potential, waiting to be unlocked.

I said, “We’ll take him.”

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how it would go. Josh had limited motor skills, was almost nonverbal, and struggled with coordination. But we made a commitment to give him our absolute best.

And Josh gave his best in return.

Over the course of nine years, Josh’s transformation was nothing short of extraordinary. He went from being unable to lift his arm for a simple block to jumping through the air, spinning swords, and performing complex Kung Fu routines.

He earned his conditional black belt—a milestone that symbolized far more than martial arts mastery. It was a testament to his grit, resilience, and the unstoppable power of belief.

Josh taught us so much. His journey reminded us that martial arts isn’t just about skill—it’s about heart. His progress challenged us to reimagine what we were capable of as teachers and as an academy.

Because of Josh, we expanded our mission to include children with disabilities. We developed programs, like Spectrum Stars, to ensure that no child would be excluded from the life-changing benefits of martial arts.

Josh’s impact didn’t stop at Kung Fu Kids. His story ripples outward, inspiring the countless students who have walked through our doors since.

In January of 2024, I received the heartbreaking news that Josh had passed away at the age of 30. His stepfather’s words deeply moved me:

“Thank you for being his teacher, mentor, and second parent. You made an incredible difference in his life.”

The truth is, Josh made just as big a difference in mine.

His legacy lives on in every child who finds a place at Kung Fu Kids, in every lesson that builds confidence and character, and in every heart that martial arts touches.
