When I first met Samantha and Andrew, I could see right away that they were unique, bright, and full of potential. Samantha, then six years old, was eager to learn, and Andrew, just four, had a playful spark but also faced challenges that I knew we’d need to navigate together.
Their mom later shared with me how both children are non-neurotypical. Samantha has dyslexia, OCD, Autism, and ADHD, and Andrew has dyslexia and dyspraxia. For Andrew, even understanding left from right was a struggle, making forms a particularly daunting challenge. Samantha, meanwhile, had her own hurdles but found joy in learning new forms. Their journey hasn’t been easy, but it’s a testament to their incredible perseverance—and the care and dedication of our coaches.
I remember hearing about a pivotal moment for Andrew. He was frustrated, feeling like he couldn’t keep up. His parents were even considering letting him step away from martial arts entirely. But thanks to the patience and encouragement of Coach Terry, Coach Tan, and Coach Larry, Andrew found the confidence to keep going. Slowly but surely, he began to feel excited about improving.
During the pandemic, when everything shifted online, Andrew’s growth truly flourished. Their family enrolled in our Master Program, and Andrew started attending class five days a week on Zoom. His focus and enthusiasm amazed me, and I loved seeing how the additional Zoom classes—and our one-on-one private lessons—helped him master techniques that once felt impossible.
For Samantha, I’m so proud of how she’s embraced her love of learning new forms. Despite her own challenges, she has made remarkable progress, showing that martial arts is about far more than physical ability—it’s about resilience, determination, and heart.
What I find so touching about Samantha and Andrew’s story is how their journey has brought not just growth in martial arts but also friendships and connection. Their mom once told me that their family has made lifelong friends here at Kung Fu Kids, and that’s one of the greatest rewards of being part of this community.
Samantha and Andrew remind me why we do what we do. Helping students overcome obstacles, grow in confidence, and thrive both on and off the mat is what makes this journey so rewarding.
