A few months ago, I had the privilege of spending six weeks at The Harker School, teaching kids from Kindergarten through 5th grade about bullying, safety, and setting boundaries. It was a full-circle moment for me—both of my kids, Keira and Kyle, attended Harker, so stepping into those classrooms felt like coming home.
This opportunity came about when Harker’s administration reached out to me. For over a decade, they had partnered with another organization to bring safety education to their students, but they wanted something more tailored, interactive, and impactful. When they asked if I could create a program for their community, I jumped at the chance.
Each week, I worked with students on understanding the different types of bullying, how to set boundaries, and identifying the “safe” people in their lives. The lessons weren’t just about teaching them what to do—they were about empowering them with confidence and practical tools to navigate tricky situations.
One of the most memorable moments came during an activity we called the “arm getaway.” It’s a simple drill where kids practice how to safely remove themselves from someone grabbing their arm. The energy in the room was electric as the students practiced, and it was incredible to see them light up with the realization, I can do this.
The feedback from the Harker team meant so much to me:
“The students were highly engaged! The language used in the presentation resonated with them and left a lasting impression. The discussions on the types of bullies were insightful, and the focus on social bullying was especially valuable.”
This experience reminded me of why I started Kung Fu Kids in the first place. Martial arts is about so much more than kicks and punches—it’s about equipping kids with life skills that help them grow into confident, resilient individuals. Whether it’s in a martial arts class or a school presentation, the goal is the same: to empower children to feel safe, capable, and ready to face the challenges life throws at them.
I’m honored to share that Harker has now asked us to return annually to teach these lessons to their students—a testament to the impact we were able to make together.
I’m grateful to the Harker community for trusting me with this responsibility, and I’m proud of the students for embracing these lessons with open hearts. Together, we’re building a safer, kinder world for the next generation.
