When we first moved into our San Jose location, it was a big leap forward. The building was twice the size of our previous one, and we had a tenant, Quiznos, helping cover the costs. It felt like a perfect setup.
But about a year or two in, things took a sharp turn. Quiznos defaulted on their lease and stopped paying rent. Before long, we had to evict them. Losing that tenant meant losing critical income—something we had counted on to keep everything running smoothly.
It was a tough situation, but I’ve always believed that challenges carry hidden opportunities. Instead of scrambling to find another tenant, we asked ourselves: What if we used this space to create something even better for our students?
Our classes were already bursting at the seams with over 400 students, so expanding into the empty space felt like the right move. Of course, it wasn’t simple. The suites weren’t connected, so we had to cut through the wall, clear out leftover junk, fix the lighting, renovate the bathrooms, and install new flooring.
It was a significant investment, but it transformed our academy. What was once a sandwich shop became a spacious new classroom, a supply area that supports all our locations, and a space that feels like it’s always been part of Kung Fu Kids.
Looking back, losing that tenant wasn’t the setback it seemed—it was a chance to grow. Today, that expanded space allows us to serve more students, offer better experiences, and strengthen the community we’re so proud to be part of.
Challenges come with every venture, but they also come with possibilities. And at Kung Fu Kids, we’ll always choose to find the opportunity hidden within.
