When I first started building the belt testing process at Kung Fu Kids, I knew I had to approach it differently. Growing up, I experienced martial arts as a competitive sport, focused solely on physical skill. But as I transitioned from competitor to teacher, my perspective shifted. I wanted to create a system that would not only test students’ martial arts abilities but also reflect the values we hold dear: confidence, respect, perseverance, and leadership.
Our belt tests aren’t just about technique. Yes, students need to demonstrate their forms, self-defense techniques, and physical skills—but they’re also graded on their character. From the way they salute their instructors to their behavior in class, every aspect of how they carry themselves is considered. For older students, we even have a leadership section on their grading sheet, ensuring they understand that martial arts is about more than just physical prowess.
Each test becomes a milestone, not just for the students but for their families too. It’s a checkpoint where we provide feedback on what they’re excelling at and what they need to improve. We hold them to a high standard so that when they eventually go for their black belt, they’re not only skilled martial artists but also good human beings.
Designing this process wasn’t easy, but it’s been worth every effort. Seeing students grow into strong, respectful, and confident individuals reminds me why we do this in the first place.
